A global brand with a mission to reward sustainability, Solar Rais launches the Women for Green Jobs (W4GJ) programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering unemployed female youth in South Africa by creating 50 jobs in the renewable energy e-mobility sector. Powered by Shortlist and GEAPP, this initiative is poised to make a significant impact on both gender equality and sustainable development.

Aligned with the global initiative "Women for Green Jobs" (W4GJ) funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), which aims to place 750 women in the Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) sector across multiple African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and the DRC. By focusing on empowering women in the green economy, we not only address unemployment but also contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).

One of the unique aspects of our programme is the catalytic funding provided by Shortlist, which is structured as a results-based facility. This innovative approach allows for accelerated impact and shorter cohort cycles. By investing in the green economy, we create opportunities for youth while driving 2X Challenge Criteria.

Through a cohort-based programme running in short cycles, individuals will gain essential industry knowledge in electric energy production, e-transportation, eco-tourism, and carbon tax. These skills will enable them to secure job roles in the e-mobility sector, effectively addressing energy, gender, climate change, and employment challenges, thereby reducing multidimensional poverty.

In South Africa, the transport and energy sectors constitute over 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the urgency of transitioning to e-mobility for a sustainable future. As we work towards achieving a just transition, the demand for e-mobility professionals will continue to grow. Our surveys of Prosumers have revealed customers may adopt more sustainable transport practices when the destination charging and eco-tourism sales and support landscape improves.

E-Mobility for sustainable development goals means fossil-fuel free transportation across land, water and air.

Furthermore, by mentoring participants through partnerships with industry experts like Sabatha Mthwecu, a member of the Energy Council of South Africa and a Global Goals ambassador for SDG7, we ensure that they receive the support they need to succeed in the green economy.
