Mount Pearl, NL , 21 Oct 2024 (Viralpressreleases.com) - The Heather Cutler Foundation has formally submitted petition e-5186 to the House of Commons, aiming to address significant deficiencies in pancreatic cancer treatment and care across Canada. Currently awaiting authorization from Health Minister Mark Holland, this petition strives to enhance survival rates for one of the nation’s deadliest cancers by advocating for improved access to treatments, increased availability of clinical trials, and the creation of national guidelines for somatic testing.

Pancreatic cancer continues to pose a significant challenge, with a five-year survival rate stagnating at just 10% over the past two decades. The petition highlights the interprovincial disparities in access to care, especially for patients in rural communities, urging the federal government to take action. A key focus of the petition is the establishment of a unified national framework that includes both genetic and somatic testing, which could vastly improve patient outcomes by aligning them with targeted therapies and clinical trials based on their tumor’s molecular profile.

“Despite advancements in precision medicine, many Canadians are confronted with the harsh reality that their health outcomes are often determined by their postal code,” stated Christopher Cutler, Founder of The Heather Cutler Foundation. “It’s imperative for the Canadian government to back initiatives like the CRAFT framework and Health Canada’s modernization of clinical trials to foster long-term improvements. However, immediate strategies are necessary for those who require solutions now. Our petition aims to change this by advocating for the timely approval of treatments and greater equity in cancer care across the country.”

Additionally, the petition addresses delays in funding for crucial drugs, such as Onivyde, a chemotherapy treatment that is approved in other countries but remains out of reach for many Canadians due to extended negotiations by the Pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance (pCPA).
